MAGLIČ

Illustration of Maglič Fortress

Maglič Fortress dates back to the Middle Ages and was most likely built in the 13th century, during the period of the medieval Serbian state. It is believed that its main purpose was to protect important routes running through the Ibar Valley.

The fog that often descends over the Ibar Valley is said to be more than just a natural phenomenon. According to legend, the fog protected Maglič and concealed it from enemies whenever danger threatened the fortress. Stories like these are often associated with the mysterious origin of the fortress's name.

The Treasure of the Cursed Jerina – According to legend, Jerina hid gold and other valuables in the area around Maglič. The treasure was never found, and it was believed that anyone who attempted to find it or disturbed the peace of the fortress could be punished.
