OHRID

Illustration of Ohrid

Lake Ohrid is one of the oldest lakes in Europe, estimated to be around 2 million years old, and its deep, crystal-clear waters are home to more than 200 unique plant and animal species.

The most fascinating of them is the Ohrid eel. It spends most of its life in Lake Ohrid, but when the time comes to reproduce, it embarks on an incredible journey across the Atlantic, all the way to the Sargasso Sea, between Bermuda and the Caribbean. There, it spawns, and its offspring then begin the long journey back to Europe and Lake Ohrid. Due to the numerous dams along the Drin River, this natural life cycle is now seriously disrupted.
