SAMOTHRACE

Illustration of the Nike of Samothrace

Samothrace is home to the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, one of the most significant ancient sanctuaries in the Aegean, known for its mysterious rituals and mysteries that were believed to offer protection, especially to travelers and sailors. At its highest point once stood Nike, the goddess of victory. Today, her statue is housed in the Louvre.

Fonias is one of the most famous rivers on Samothrace, descending from Mount Fengari through a wild and rocky gorge. Along its course are numerous waterfalls and natural pools, known as vathres. Its name, which means “murderer” in Greek, is no coincidence – its steep cliffs, slippery rocks, and powerful torrents have claimed human lives throughout history.
